Down the Rabbit Hole…

I hate the “burm” on our property. (The strip of grass – or weeds- between the street and the sidewalk. It is hideous and hard to maintain. So, I decided to put in new soil down about 6″ and plant some sunflowers and corn. I promised my son we could grow sunflowers for mom. And, corn takes up too much space in my other beds.

Then I started digging and found that the soil only went down about 3 inches. Bummer. No wonder healthy grass wouldn’t grow. So I had to build ghetto raised beds. But did it with the wood and screws i had in the basement. Finished today and planted… and got a nice sunburn on my back.

Planting Day, part I

Spent my few free moments this past week prepping my beds.

  • Year one of using my own home make compost. Yay!
  • Using mostly organic granular fertilizer this year.
  • Mixed with a pitch fork and topped off with fresh loam.

Got most everything in the ground today. I like to staple strings down to help guide me and to help me know where I should be looking for germination… and weed out weeds.
