I’m super behind in posting, but I wanted to get one out today. The first frost came super early this year, knocked out my fall green beans, the last of the tomatoes, and the peppers… before they even turned red. My fall pea plants have not produced a single pea. However pea tendrils are always delicious… if you have the patience to pick them. Here they are with sliced flat iron steak and parsnip puree from homegrown parsnips. The tendrils are sauteed very quickly with EVOO, salt, and pepper and tossed with lemon juice before serving.
So the lettuce finally came in. So, not counting my cucumber panzanella, this is my first salad totally from the garden. (Except for the salami — my wife won’t let me get pigs… yet.) Salad, breakfast of champions.
Also, we’ve had torrential rain the last week or so. Many of my beautiful sungold toms have split even though I harvest daily. It happens. Don’t’ toss them. Make a salad or oven roast them and put them under oil. They’ll last months. More on that later.
Roasted with garlic and lemon.
Stir fry with chicken and hoisin.
Steamed with EVOO.
Or… Broccoli, ziti, cream.
The Sungolds have been gangbusters. But this black krim was my first real ‘mater and it was delicious.
So, I can’t seem to get my brussels sprouts to grow well from seed. They germinate and then get all stringy and fall over or die. Three years in a row. And, I wanted to get them in the ground early. So, I didn’t wait for the local place where I love to get herbs etc. Eagle Farms So I bought seedlings at Home Depot. (Gasp!) But they’ve been really good. I’ve Capt’n Jacked them weekly during pest season, but they have seemed to thrive in less sunny, less well drained bed. I just topped them on the 10th of Sept. (Because I’m writing this retroactively. But this pic was when I first noticed that they were really coming in on Aug. 20th.
I’ve been gone for a few years. Time has been tight with our second child in the picture. I’ve focused all my “extra” time on making the garden work. But I have been taking pictures all along. She’s 4 1/2 now and our oldest is 9 1/2. I’m going to try to go back and retroactively post my pics and do the same going forward. Probably not a lot of time for text but at least I’ll get back into it.
Bought a bass today ’cause I missed butchering.
Pan seared bass, poached potatoes, sauteed green beans and a blistered sungold tomato and basil sauce. Everything but the fish was from the garden!
